Introduction to Kathmandu
Kathmandu is the political, economic, and cultural center of Nepal and is located approximately 1,400 meters above sea level. The city is home to many historically important temples and ruins, and is home to a variety of cultures and traditions. Kathmandu Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Main attractions
Swayambhunath Stupa
Swayambhunath Temple, commonly known as the "Monkey Temple", is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Kathmandu. The temple is located on a hill, offering beautiful views of the Kathmandu Valley. There are many monkeys living around the temple, giving it the nickname “Monkey Temple.”
Pashupatinath Temple
Pashupatinath Temple is one of the most sacred temples of Hinduism and is dedicated to the god Shiva. Located near the Bagmati River, this temple is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and is visited by many devotees. Traditional Hindu funeral ceremonies take place at the ghats around the temple.
Boudhanath Stupa
Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in Nepal and an important sacred site for Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed to have been built around the 14th century, and the huge hemispherical stupa and colorful flags surrounding it are impressive. There are many Tibetan Buddhist temples and monasteries around the stupa.
Durbar Square
Kathmandu Darbar Square is where the royal palace from the Kingdom of Nepal is located and is home to many historic buildings and temples. Here you can admire Nepal's traditional architecture, and many historic sites are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Major attractions include Kumari Bahal and Gaddi Baithak.
Thamel
Thamel is Kathmandu's main tourist hub and offers a variety of accommodation, restaurants and shops. This is a backpacker's paradise and is the starting and ending point of a trip to Nepal. In Thamel, you can shop for traditional Nepalese handicrafts, clothing, and jewelry, as well as sample a variety of international cuisine.

Kathmandu is the starting point for Himalayan trekking, and there are various trekking courses. World-famous trekking routes, including Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit, start from Kathmandu. For a short hike, head to Nagarkot or Shivapuri Hill.
